Wines from Can Bas Wine Estate have been recognised in the Vinari Prizes, the competition with the objective of prizing the best wines of the year in terms of quality and distinctiveness from Catalonia known. Can Bas Xarel·lo 2017 was the winner in the young whites category, and received a second Gold as Best Wine from DO Penedès 2018. At Vinari, it was described as “an exemplary white wine produced with Penedès’ star variety, xarel·lo”.
All the wines presented to the competition received a special mention. As well as Xarel·lo 2017, Can Bas Muscat 2017 –the winery’s novelty of that year–carried away Silver in the same category, and La Creu 2017 and La Romana 2016 won Bronze in the ageing whites category.
Can Bas Xarel·lo is a very expressive single variety wine with a strong personality, a result of the production process and of the organoleptic quality of the grapes. The grapes macerate in their skins for two hours before gentle pressing in small batches. A short part of the ageing process is carried out in French oak barrels, and the remaining time in ceramic jars, for six months.
Can Bas Wine Estate’s line of single variety wines is created to be a sincere expression of the variety and of the land of the historic estate on which it was born. The grape harvest is brought in by hand, and the grapes are selected, first at the vine and then at the selection table. The Estate’s vines are undergoing conversion to organic production. From 2018, the wines from Can Bas Wine Estate will carry the organic agriculture certification, CCPAE.
According to the organisers of Vinari, this competition is “a recognition by the country’s experts of the best producers, who have made something more than a good wine”. For Pere Ventura Family Wine Estates, Vinari is also a recognition of our territory and the whole human team, especially our winemakers, professionals who love their work, which is reflected in the wines.
The Vinari 2018 Prizes had a participation of 250 wineries and 902 references. The professional jury was made up of eighty professionals from sommeliers, winemaking, distribution, exportation, communication and prescription of wines, as well as part of the official INCAVI wine tasting panel. All of them qualified all the wines taking part, over four days of blind tasting which took place from 21st to 25th May at the INCAVI headquarters in Vilafranca del Penedès. The wines that obtained the best scores in this first stage, were tested and evaluated again at another session which took place on 3rd September at the Rubí Winery.
